Junk Car Fun Facts

Automobiles are the most recycled item in the US. This may be quite a surprise for a lot of people read. It is true though! The steel industry recycles more than 14 million tons of steel from scrapped vehicles each year, which is the equivalent of approximately 13.5 million cars. And if this wasn't surprising already, these numbers are still climbing. Around 27 million cars are recycled around the world so the US account for about half of this number alone!

Car recycling as work, has become a fixture in the US economy. In fact, it ranks 16th largest out of all the industries in the country, generating revenue of $25 billion per year, and providing jobs and wages to around 100 thousand people around the country.

Junk car recycling is not some new phenomena. In fact, recycling cars, as of 2022, is one year away from being 80 year old! That's right the first car was recycled all the way back in 1943, which makes sense when you consider how much useful material a junk car has. Still, a cool piece of history right there!

There are over 7,000 car recycling locations across the country.

More than 90 million barrels of oil are saved every year because of automobile recycling. This is because that oil would have been needed to be used to create new car parts instead of being able to reuse the parts from the junk car.

Only roughly 80% of a car can actually be recycled

Car batteries are recyclable in 98 percent to 99 percent of cases.

Car removal firms sell high-quality old car parts for a fraction of the cost of brand new parts (up to 80% less).

Roadways, sandals, and carpets can all be made of recycled tire material, making tires one of the most commonly used and versatile parts of the car used in the recycling process.

Windshield recycling is now possible thanks to technological advancements.
