Toe Truck History: The Very First Toe Truck (Info Source)

100 years ago, Ernest Holmes Sr. invented the first tow truck. He was inspired after he spent hours and hours with 8 other full grown men using manual supplies such as wood rope, etc. to help leverage a car stuck towards the edge of a river to even be able to move it one inch at a time. It took many inches and many minutes that way so Holmes Sr. said ya know what I can figure something out here... and he did!
The first trial run didn't work as Holmes tried using just a basic car instead of something more heavy duty, but like many great American inventors, Holmes persisted, and, unafraid spending a lot of time and money, eventually built a viable machine. His first proper toe truck, called the "Holmes 485" would have costed a whopping $250 million! But considering it was the first of its kind, the expense proved well worth it and sparked the evolution of the towing that has still been evolving to this day!
What kind of tow truck equipment did the first ones have?
Early tow trucks used a complicated looking towing device by today’s standards that served to be at the time to be a monumental breakthrough that would stabilize a vehicle that it would tow. The equipment would then evolve as time went on every few years or so a new model would come out and slightly improve upon its predecessor by allowing the tow truck to have more control of the vehicle it was towing at faster speeds. The “V” towing coupler was a big breakthrough as it allowed the tow truck driver to reach up to 30 mph towing a car with no damage!
